Getting Your North Texas Pool Ready for Swim Season

Every March, we get the same call from homeowners across Aubrey and Pilot Point. The weather has finally turned the corner. Kids are asking about the pool. And the cover is coming off a body of water that spent the last four months untouched. The good news is that a North Texas pool comes back to life pretty quickly once you know the order of operations. The less good news is that skipping any of those steps almost always shows up as green water, a stuck heater, or a stained plaster surface by June.

Start with the equipment pad. Before you turn anything on, walk to the pad and take a careful look. Check the pump housing for cracks, listen for any hum coming from the equipment, and inspect the filter for any weeping around the clamp. Winter is hard on gaskets. If a valve turns hard or an o-ring looks dry, replace it now rather than in a rush later. If you have a variable-speed pump and an automation panel, run the equipment through one full cycle before you touch chemistry.

Next, look at the water level and the tile line. If evaporation dropped the level below the skimmer over the winter, the pump will run dry as soon as you turn it on. Top off to the middle of the skimmer opening, then take a close look at the waterline tile. Fine calcium buildup is normal. Heavy scaling, missing grout, or loose tiles are signs that spring is a good time to plan a tile refresh, which we usually recommend as part of a broader remodel or a full resurface.

Now for chemistry. Before you shock the pool, brush every wall and floor surface with a good stiff brush, then vacuum. Chemistry does a much better job when it is not fighting through a layer of settled dust. Test total alkalinity, pH, and calcium hardness first, then adjust to the middle of the recommended range. Only after those numbers are dialed in should you shock the pool and start balancing chlorine and cyanuric acid. If you are on a salt system, verify the cell has been cleaned and set the output rate for the season.

Finally, take a step back and look at the finish. Roughness underfoot, dark stains that will not brush out, or bond coat showing through are all signals that the plaster or aggregate finish is at the end of its life. In North Texas, most plaster finishes last around ten to fifteen years before they start telling you it is time. Modern quartz and pebble finishes can push twenty. If you are on the edge, spring is the right time to plan it rather than fight the pool all summer. A good spring opening is what makes the difference between a pool that quietly runs all summer and a pool that fights you every weekend.
